Bradykinin in health and disease: proceedings of the Bradykinin Symposium 2012, Berlin 23–24 August 2012

The following summarises the plenary lectures of the ‘Bradykinin Symposium 2012’ held on 23−24 August 2012 at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany.

CX3CL1 (fractalkine) and TNFα production by perfused human placental lobules under normoxic and hypoxic conditions in vitro: the importance of CX3CR1 signaling

Objective: Inflammation and hypoxia activate the fractalkine (CX3CL1) receptor (CX3CR1)-related signaling pathway. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) induces CX3CL1, influencing a mechanism of CX3CL1 autoregulation by CX3CR1 expression.

Wheal and flare reactions in skin prick tests of patients treated with montelukast alone or in combination with antihistamines

Background: Because antileukotrienes may inhibit inflammation, it is plausible that montelukast administered for a long time could suppress skin wheal and flare reaction, and thus, it should be discarded prior to the tests.

Anti-inflammatory effects of rutin on HMGB1-induced inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo

Objective and design: High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein acts as a late mediator of severe vascular inflammatory conditions. Rutin (RT), an active flavonoid compound, is well known to possess potent antiplatelet, antiviral and antihypertensive properties.

Opioid signaling in mast cells regulates injury responses associated with heterotopic ossification

Introduction: Previous studies found that neuron specific enolase promoter (Nse-BMP4) transgenic mice have increased expression of the nociceptive mediator, substance P and exaggerated local injury responses associated with heterotopic ossification (HO).

Effects of costimulation on intrahepatic immunopathogenesis in patients with chronic HBV infection

Objective: Chronic HBV infection can lead to “immune tolerance” in asymptomatic carriers (ACs), “immune injury” in active chronic hepatitis (ACH) patients or “immune abnormality” in cirrhosis (Cir) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.

The antagonistic effect of the sigma 1 receptor ligand (+)-MR200 on persistent pain induced by inflammation

Objective and design: The sigma 1 (σ1) receptor, which is widely distributed in the CNS in areas that are known to be important for pain control, may play a role in persistent pain characterized by the hypersensitivity of nociceptive transmission.

Histamine induces chemotaxis and phagocytosis in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages and RAW 264.7 macrophage-like cells via histamine H4-receptor

Objective: Expression and function of histamine H4-receptor, an immunomodulatory receptor involved in inflammatory diseases, on murine macrophages, which are vital for immunity, were investigated.
